Font Issues in Lotus Notes

Thursday, May 7, 2009

Sometimes you receive or send mails from or to external domain with distorted characters. the possible reason from the server side is incorrect MIME settings or MIME conversion. check the MIME setting on the server as well as Person document for the field
"Format preference for incoming mail:".
Please use "Keep in senders' format" in this field for best fidelity.
but if the server side settings are correct and still users face this issue then there might be some changes required from the Lotus Notes client side or OS(windows) side.

from the client check the location document for the field
"Format for messages addressed to internet addresses:" use notes rich text format for best result.but the last option which I found for the character distortion is to check the regional settings on your OS and use support for all the languages.

For the email containing the distorted characters check the Fonts for those characters and then check the font in Windows Character Map as shown below.Looking at this font in the character map in Windows, you can check if the font contain English characters (other than numerals and punctuation), If it doesnt then this may explain why it is inconsistent in display.

to resolve this Please access Control Panel -> Regional and Language Settings -> Languages tab and add support for complex script and East Asian languages. See if this affects the behavior of your client when viewing this font. ,most of the time its not an issue with the Notes client, but with the use of multiple uncommon fonts by the sender.

The best/easiest solution to resolve the issue for all users may be to simply request that the sender use more standardized and widely available fonts in the emails.
